Roof Straps & Clips: How They Affect Your FL Insurance

Single Wraps

Double Wraps (or Straps)

The gold standard is the double wrap, also called a full strap or hurricane strap. This connector wraps around both sides of the truss — coming up from the wall plate, going over or around the truss on each side, and nailing down securely on both faces. How Are Connectors Identified? The Wind Mitigation Inspection

Florida's Office of Insurance Regulation created the Citizens Wind Mitigation Inspection Form (OIR-B1-1802), which licensed inspectors use to document the construction features of your home — including your roof-to-wall connectors. When you get a free inspection, a qualified inspector will enter your attic, locate the truss-to-wall-plate connections, and photograph them.

Here's what the inspector actually looks at:

  • Connector type — clip, single wrap, or double wrap, as described above
  • Nail pattern — how many nails are in each connector and their placement
  • Consistency — inspectors look at multiple connections across the attic to make sure the rating applies to the whole roof

The inspector photographs the connectors and records the findings on the standardized form.
